Volunteers for Outdoor California has great park stewardship projects scheduled in Northern California in 2008. An intensive process is used to select premiere projects. Here is what we have planned.

Earth Day Extravaganza

Well over 200 volunteers came to San Jose's Alum Rock Park for V-O-Cal's first trail work weekend of the year April 18-20. The volunteers refurbished the entire length of the South Rim Trail, which had not been worked on in years and spruced up parts of the Switchback Trail as well.

Calistoga/ Napa Valley Weekend

Spend the weekend in Calistoga with the Napa County Park and Open Space District May 17-18. We'll work on erosion problems on the historic Oat Hill Mine Trail. Despite its status as a destination trail for mountain bikers and a local hiker favorite, this is not an official trail. This work will enable the Park District to formally open the trail to use.

Oakland Adventures

June 7-8 the City of Oakland [Sign-up]

Install a network of trails in King Estates Open Space on National Trails Day weekend, June 7-8. This beautiful natural grassland park with terrific views is a gem in the middle of Oakland but has no trails. As a special treat, we will be camping at the zoo! SF Wilderness

Glen Canyon Park - June 28-29 [Sign-up]

San Francisco's Glen Canyon Park is a wonderful bit of wilderness in the heart of the city, but it is in need of some care and repair. June 28-29, in partnership with SF Recreation and Parks, roughly 175 V-O-Cal volunteers will maintain and repair the primary trail network, repair drainage, reroute a highly erosive of trail section, install a raised turnpike over two boggy areas of much-used trails and remove invasive French broom.

Brushy Peak Loop Trail Project

East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD); the project will be September 13-14 at Brushy Peak. Read about the Brushy Peak Regional Preserve on the EB parks website. Volunteers will create a formalized loop trail system designed to provide new public access into the Preserve while avoiding sensitive environmental and cultural resources. This 1.9 miles of new 5-foot wide narrow trail will be designated as multi-use, for bicyclists, equestrians, and hikers.   The project will also include building a 0.5 mile connector trail to the summit to provide the public with panoramic views and interpretative opportunities of the rich Native American history of the park.

A couple of other exciting project locations are not ready for description yet, but we hope to have more information soon.

Update: We regret to report the October 4-5 project with Muir Heritage Land Trust is postponed pending bridge permitting and construction.
