V-O-CAL WINS EVENT AWARD AT
26th ANNUAL CALIFORNIA STATE TRAILS
AND GREENWAYS CONFERENCE

Corona Heights Project
V-O-Cal's Corona Heights Project in San Francisco in 2010 was recognized for the prestigious Event Award - among stiff competition. The award was presented to Executive Director Cathy Moyer in front of the record-setting 417 attendees at the 2011 California State Trails and Greenways Conference. Nominated by the Natural Areas Program of San Francisco Rec and Park, this award category honors outstanding trail events.

As identified in the award text (see below), V-O-Cal crew leaders made it possible to build this challenging and very technical trail. This project really stretched us all, making the finished trail and the recognition it has garnered all the more rewarding.

Crew leaders on this project included: Matt Fitzgerald, Eric Barnett (Bam Bam), Erk Anderson, Fran Loop, Morris Older, Woody Collins, Jodi Bailey, Jon Wright, David Pruitt, Mark Sinclair, Derek Coker, and Helen & Jim McMahon. This award is for you!

Award Text: "The Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) mobilized over 100 volunteers for trail work on the weekend of August 20-22, 2010. Together they assisted the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department (Natural Areas Program in a trail construction project at Corona Heights. Unsafe access illegal camping and trash accumulation were some of the issues at the site. The neighborhood residents had been trying for years to clean up this area, but with limited resources and agency staff nothing could be accomplished. The V-O-Cal crew leaders used their knowledge and expertise to bring a solution to the ongoing problems. The opening of the trail now allows for park users to safely access additional park acreage and provides for a safe shortcut for the local youth to reach the interactive Randall Museum. "
