‍Overview: Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal)

‍Since its founding in 2006, Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) has been the premier volunteer organization for major hands-on trail building and renovation projects both in and beyond the greater San Francisco Bay Area.   V-O-Cal’s signature weekend projects, which often involve over 100 volunteers, are highly valued by park agencies and land trusts from Big Sur to Napa and Sonoma and from San Francisco to east of Mt. Diablo, even extending as far as Sonora.  The projects are selected by a Project Development Team and each project is run by a Project Team.  The projects have provided countless members of the public with access to the beauty, peace and restorative tranquility of the area’s magnificent open spaces. 

‍Position Overview

‍V-O-Cal seeks an Executive Director to strengthen, develop and grow its land stewardship mission through fund-raising, administrative and operational support.  The position is new, as all functions are currently performed on a volunteer basis, but times change, and V-O-Cal must adapt.  V-O-Cal envisions that the ED will start on a part-time basis, with the objective of becoming full-time as fundraising allows.  The ED will develop and report to a Board of Directors.  The ED will also coordinate with and support the volunteer Project Development Team, Project Teams and land managers to identify and facilitate trail projects.

‍Virtually none of the public land managers within V-O-Cal’s service area have the budget or staff to perform all of the trail building, maintenance and renovation they need.  V-O-Cal helps fill the gap.  With a trail project season from April to October, V-O-Cal aims to perform one major weekend project each month, and occasionally supports half-day projects.  The projects are selected during the off-season by a Project Development Team.  Each project itself is organized and run by a Project Team (Project Lead, Technical Lead, Crew Leader Manager, Kitchen Lead, Crew Leaders, etc.), which closely coordinates with the land manager.  Each project begins with set-up of a central camp on Friday afternoon and continues with trail work on Saturday and until early Sunday afternoon.  Volunteers for the project are recruited from a V-O-Cal database, by land manager partners, and by public outreach.  V-O-Cal provides everything needed for the project except volunteers’ personal camping gear.   V-O-Cal leases a warehouse that houses the substantial trail tools, field kitchen, food storage and other materials required for the projects.  

‍Responsibilities

* Maintain V-O-Cal compliance as an IRS 501(c)(3) in good standing, including adhering to statutory qualifications and making or organizing all required corporate and tax filings
* Recruit and report to a Board of Directors
* Non-profit fundraising – identify and establish funding relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors (both funding and in-kind donations), as well as identifying and submitting appropriate grant applications
* Finance and administration 
     - Maintain calendar of project and administration dates
     - Budgeting
     - Banking, including bill pay
     - Bookkeeping
     - Coordinate website maintenance (maintenance is currently performed by volunteers)
     - Lease management
     - Risk management, including maintaining necessary insurance
* Assist in identifying , recruiting, and coordinating training volunteers for leadership positions to support the management of the following operations:
     - Manage V-O-Cal warehouse, including inventory and coordinating equipment repair
     - Support Project Team preparation for projects, including overseeing food ordering and shopping
     - Maintain project data and volunteer records
     - Develop and promote land manager relationships
     - Publicity, including project outreach and coordinating website messaging 
     - Volunteer coordination, including responding or coordinating responses to volunteer communications

*  Must be willing to work evenings and weekends based on periodic project and meeting requirements

Education, experience and skill requirements

* Excellent communication and people skills, including oral, written and occasional public speaking
* At least 4 years applicable administration experience with a strong team leadership component
* At least 4 years IRS section 501(c)(3) compliance experience
* At least 3 years non-profit fundraising experience (prefer also grant-writing experience)

‍Compensation

‍This is an exempt position.  Initial compensation will be $50,000 per year.  As noted above, V-O-Cal envisions that as fund-raising allows, both compensation and time commitments will increase with the objective of the position becoming full-time.
